The 2024 Greek Film Festival is ready to captivate audiences with a unique selection of films and documentaries celebrating Greek culture. Neos Kosmos and the Greek Community of Melbourne are offering four double passes for the premiere at The Astor Theatre.

The Festival opens on October 15 with the comedy ‘Hear Who’s Talking’ starring Elias Meletis (Your Family, Julia’s Matchmaking).

The opening sets the tone for a program running until October 27, featuring 23 feature films and seven documentaries, each offering a unique perspective on contemporary Greek society.

One of the highlights of this year’s Festival, presented in Melbourne by the Greek Community of Melbourne, is the Australian premiere of the award-winning film ‘The Murderess’ (on October 19 at The Astor Theatre, 7 pm).

Directed by Eva Nathena, the film has garnered critical acclaim, winning 12 awards and receiving 14 nominations at film festivals worldwide. It will also represent Greece in the competitive process for the Academy Awards.

‘Murderess’ – an intense story that sheds light on a global issue

The film, based on the famous novel by Alexandros Papadiamantis, is set on a Greek island in the early 20th century, where an oppressive patriarchal society pushes women to the edge.

The protagonist, played by actress Karyofyllia Karabeti, turns into a murderer in an effort to “free” young girls from their social fate, committing femicide.

Festival screenings will take place in more venues this year (The Astor Theatre, Palace Cinema Como, Palace Balwyn Cinema, and, for the first time, Palace Cinemas Pentridge).

The documentary section includes several fascinating films, including the Australian ‘Ange & The Boss – Puskas in Australia’, by award-winning directors Tony Wilson and Cam Fink.

The film covers the remarkable career of legendary Hungarian striker Ferenc Puskas as a player and coach, who left an indelible mark on South Melbourne Hellas, with the team captain at the time being today’s Tottenham Hotspur coach, Ange Postecoglou.

Also featured is ‘Anzacs: The Greek Chapter’, a feature-length documentary by Peter Ewer, author of The Forgotten Anzacs, and acclaimed director John Irwin. The documentary covers Hitler’s invasion of Greece in April 1941.
