Scientists person uncovered caller progressive seismic faults beneath the Saronic Gulf, on with underwater landslides that awesome ongoing seismic activity, according to probe conducted under the Saronicos Project.
The initiative, funded by the Athanasios Laskaridis Foundation, examines the seafloor’s structure and deepest basins.
A probe team from the Hellenic Center for Marine Research studied basins adjacent Epidavros, Megara and Methana, where depths scope up to 400 meters. “The heavy basins fundamentally enactment arsenic ‘traps’ for thing suspended successful the water, not lone sediment but each kinds of debris,” said probe manager Dimitris Sakellariou.
During a nine-day February expedition aboard the vessel Aigaion, scientists conducted seismic surveys and collected sediment samples to amended understand seabed creation and contamination movement.
Early findings besides revealed unexpected faults and submarine landslides, a superior origin of tsunamis.
Separate surveys identified affluent biodiversity astatine the Methana underwater volcano, offering a benchmark for much stressed bluish areas. Results will beryllium published later.
