Olympics From Ancient Past to Inspired Future

‘Birth’ (presenting Ancient Olympia), ‘Revival’ (the Athens Olympics in 1896) and ‘Return of the Olympic Games to Greece’ (featuring the Games held in Athens in 2004) are three major sections of the exhibition. These are followed by ‘Principles and Values’, which presents the principles and vision – and the individuals behind them – of the International Olympic Movement.

The Museum has also created a space that is exclusively dedicated to the Paralympic Games and the athletes with disabilities who have made them the exemplary athletic event they have become today.

A United Effort

In its creation, the Athens Olympic Museum collaborated with over 40 global and national cultural institutions including leading museums such as the Metropolitan Museum of New York, the British Museum, the Bavarian State Archaeological Collection in Munich and the State Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg. Many of the exhibit items at the museum were contributed by Greek Olympic and Paralympic Champions who offered their medals and personal belongings to help further enrich the visitor’s experience.

Time Travel to Ancient Olympia

The museum is currently presenting the touring exhibition “Ancient Olympia: Common Grounds” as its temporary exhibition. It encourages us to digitally navigate and explore Ancient Olympia, as it stood over 2,000 years ago. “Go back in time and stop in 173 A.D.; navigate the sights and digital monuments; listen to the sounds of the Ancient Games and become part of their history,” the museum writes on its website. Visitors can also ‘visit’ 3D versions of the historical monuments in ancient Olympia via desktops located in its hall.

Robotics, Engineering, AI , Design & Olympics

Keen to light up the spirits of children with Olympic inspiration, the museum is open for school visits and regularly runs educational workshops. Past workshops have included STEM education events, AI projects and even costume design assignments.
